Frequently Asked Questions About Acne

Acne is a very common disease. People who have it tend to have similar kinds of questions about it and its treatment. This section addresses some of the common questions asked by people with acne. Please remember that your dermatologist is always the best source of specific information about your individual health issues, including acne.

Questions and Answer does follows:

1.   What causes acne?

The causes of acne are linked to the changes that take place as young people mature from childhood to adolescence (puberty). The hormones that cause physical maturation also cause the sebaceous (oil) glands of the skin to produce more sebum (oil). The hormones with the greatest effect on sebaceous glands are androgens (male hormones), which are present in females as well as males, but in higher amounts in males.

Sebaceous glands are found together with a hair shaft in a unit called a sebaceous follicle. During puberty, the cells of the skin that line the follicle begin to shed more rapidly. In people who develop acne, cells shed and stick together more so than in people who do not develop acne. When cells mix with the increased amount of sebum being produced, they can plug the opening of the follicle. Meanwhile, the sebaceous glands continue to produce sebum, and the follicle swells up with sebum.

In addition, a normal skin bacteria called P. acnes, begins to multiply rapidly in the clogged hair follicle. In the process, these bacteria produce irritating substances that can cause inflammation. Sometimes, the wall of the follicle bursts, spreading inflammation to the surrounding skin. This is the process by which acne lesions, from blackheads to pimples to nodules, are formed.

2.   I wash my face several times a day. Why do I still get acne?

Many people still believe that acne is caused by dirty skin. The truth is, washing alone will not clear up or prevent acne. Washing does, however, help remove excess surface oils and dead skin cells. Many people use all kinds of products, including alcohol-based cleansers, and scrub vigorously, only to irritate the skin further and worsen their acne. Washing the skin twice a day gently with water and a mild soap is usually all that is required. However, acne is actually caused by a variety of biologic factors that are beyond the control of washing. For that reason, you should use appropriate acne treatments for the acne.

3.   Does stress cause acne?

Stress is commonly blamed for the development of acne. Stress can have many physiologic effects on the body, including changes in hormones that may theoretically lead to acne. In some cases the stress may actually be caused by the acne lesions, not the other way around! If the acne is being treated effectively, stress is not likely to have much impact on the majority of people.

4.   I never had acne as a teenager. Why am I now getting acne as an adult?

Usually, acne begins at puberty and is gone by the early 20s. In some cases, acne may persist into adulthood. Such types of acne include severe forms that affect the body as well as the face (which afflict males more than females) and acne associated with the menstrual cycle in women. In other cases, acne may not present itself until adulthood. Such acne is more likely to affect females than males.

There are several reasons for this. As females get older, the pattern of changes in hormones may itself change, disposing sebaceous glands to develop acne. Ovarian cysts and pregnancy may also cause hormonal changes that lead to acne. Some women get acne when they discontinue birth control pills that have been keeping acne at bay. Sometimes young women may wear cosmetics that are comedogenic-that is, they can set up conditions that cause comedones to form.

5.   What role does diet play in acne?

Acne is not caused by food. Following a strict diet will not, clear your skin. While some people feel that their acne is aggravated by certain foods, particularly chocolate, colas, peanuts, shellfish and some fatty foods, there is no scientific evidence that suggests food causes or influences acne. Avoid any foods which seem to worsen your acne and, for your overall health, eat a balanced diet-but diet shouldn't really matter if the acne is being appropriately treated.

6.   Does the sun help acne?

Many patients feel that sunlight improves their acne lesions and go to great lengths to find sources of ultraviolet light. There is no proven effect of sunlight on acne. In addition, ultraviolet light in sunlight increases the risk of skin cancer and early aging of the skin. It is, therefore, not a recommended technique of acne management, especially since there are many other proven forms of treatment for acne. Moreover, many acne treatments increase the skin's sensitivity to ultraviolet light, making the risk of ultraviolet light exposure all the worse.

7.   What is the best way to treat acne?

Everyone's acne must be treated individually. If you have not gotten good results from the acne products you have tried, consider seeing a dermatologist. Your dermatologist will decide which treatments are best for you. For more information about the types of acne treatments that are available, and for basic acne treatment guidelines, please see Acne Treatments in the main part of AcneNet.

8.   What kind of cosmetics and cleansers can an acne patient use?

Look for "noncomedogenic" cosmetics and toiletries. These products have been formulated so that they will not cause acne.

Some acne medications cause irritation or pronounced dryness particularly during the early weeks of therapy, and some cosmetics and cleansers can actually worsen this effect. The choice of cosmetics and cleansers should be made with your dermatologist or pharmacist.

Heavy foundation makeup should be avoided. Most acne patients should select powder blushes and eye shadow over cream products because they are less irritating and noncomedogenic. Camouflaging techniques can be used effectively by applying a green undercover cosmetic over red acne lesions to promote color blending.

9.   Is it harmful to squeeze my blemishes?

Yes. In general, acne lesions should not be picked or squeezed by the patient. In particular, inflammatory acne lesions should never be squeezed. Squeezing forces infected material deeper into the skin, causing additional inflammation and possible scarring.

1.      Can anything be done about scarring caused by acne?

Scarring is best prevented by getting rid of the acne. Dermatologists can use various methods to improve the scarring caused by acne. The treatment must always be individualized for the specific patient. Chemical peels may be used in some patients, while dermabrasion or laser abrasion may benefit others. It is important that the acne be well controlled before any procedure is used to alleviate scarring.

2.      How long before I see a visible result from using my acne medication?

The time for improvement depends upon the product being used, but in almost all cases it is more a matter of weeks or months instead of days. Most dermatologists would recommend the use of a medication or combination of medications daily for 4 to 8 weeks before they would change the treatment. It is very important for patients to be aware of this time frame so they do not become discouraged and discontinue their medications. Conversely, if you see no change whatsoever, you might want to check with your dermatologist regarding the need to change treatments.

3.      Would using my medication more frequently than prescribed speed up the clearing of my acne?

No-always use your medication exactly as your dermatologist instructed. Using topical medications more often than prescribed may actually induce more irritation of the skin, redness and follicular plugging, which can delay clearing time. If oral medications are taken more frequently than prescribed, they won't work any better, but there is a greater chance of side effects.

4.      My topical treatment seems to work on the spots I treat, but I keep getting new acne blemishes. What should I do?

Topical acne medications are made to be used on all acne-prone areas, not just individual lesions. Part of the goal is to treat the skin before lesions can form and to prevent formation, not just to treat existing lesions. Patients are generally advised to treat all of the areas (forehead, cheeks, chin and nose) that tend to break out rather than just individual lesions.

5.      My face is clear! Can I stop taking my medication now?

If your dermatologist says you can stop, then stop-but follow your dermatologist's instructions. Many times patients will stop their medication suddenly only to have their acne flare up several weeks later. If you are using multiple products, it may be advisable to discontinue one medication at a time and judge results before discontinuing them all at once. Ask your dermatologist before you stop using any of your medications.

6.      Does it matter what time I use my medication?

Check with your dermatologist or pharmacist. If you were taking one dose a day of an antibiotic, you could probably take it in the morning, at midday or in the evening, although you should pick one time of day and stay with it throughout your treatment. With oral medications prescribed twice a day or three times a day, you should try your best to spread out the doses evenly. Some antibiotics should be taken on an empty or nearly empty stomach. For optimal results with topical treatments, you should strictly follow your dermatologist's recommendations. For example, if instructed to apply benzoyl peroxide in the morning and a topical retinoid at bedtime, it is important to follow these directions strictly. If the two were applied together at bedtime, for example, you could decrease the efficacy of the treatment because of chemical reactions that make them less effective.

7.      I have trouble remembering to take my oral medication every day. What's a good way to remember? What should I do if I forget a dose?

This is a common problem. Many patients try to associate taking their medication with a routine daily event such as brushing teeth or applying makeup. It also helps to keep the medication close to the area where the reminder activity is carried out.

In most cases, if you miss a day of your oral treatment, do not double up the next day; rather, get back to your daily regimen as soon as possible-but there may be different instructions for different oral medications. Ask your dermatologist or pharmacist about what to do if you miss a dose of your particular medication.

8.      I have been using topical benzoyl peroxide and an oral antibiotic for my acne and have noticed blue-black and brown marks developing on my face and some discoloration on my body. The marks are especially noticeable around acne scars and recently healed lesions. Is this a side effect of medication and is it permanent?

It is not possible to make general statements about side effects of medications that apply to individual cases. A dermatologist should be consulted. The facial marks and body discoloration described by the patient in this case do fall within the range of side effects of some antibiotics.

Unique patterns of pigmentation are sometimes seen in acne patients treated with certain oral antibiotics-particularly minocycline. The pigmentation patterns that appear may include:
* Localized blue-black or brown marks in and around acne scars and in areas of previous acne inflammation

* A "muddy skin" appearance that may cover much of the body

* Diffuse brownish pigmentation of the feet and lower legs.

The pigmentation side effect gradually disappears after the therapy is discontinued.

Any side effect of a medication should be noted by the patient and brought to the attention of the physician. While most side effects are temporary they should be discussed with the physician and monitored.

1.   My doctor is prescribing a topical retinoid for my acne. He said a retinoid is a substance related to vitamin A. If the drug is related to vitamin A, shouldn't vitamin A dietary supplements be helpful in getting rid of acne?

Dietary vitamin A is essential to good health, especially vision. It has healthful effects in the skin. Large doses of vitamin A for the treatment of acne is not recommended on grounds of safety. The retinoids and retinoid-like substances used as topical treatments for acne are prepared especially for their potent effect on the shedding of cell lining in the sebaceous follicle. Their use should be monitored by a dermatologist.

Dietary vitamin A has multiple health effects in the human body. Vitamin A is essential for good vision. Extreme vitamin A deficiency can result in blindness, usually accompanied by dry, scaly skin. Vitamin A overdose that far exceeds the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of 5,000 IU can have effects nearly as catastrophic. Extreme vitamin A overdose can cause the skin to blister and peel-an effect first seen in early North Pole explorers who nearly died after eating polar bear liver that has an extraordinarily high vitamin A content.

Topical retinoids are usually prescribed as a treatment for moderate to severe acne. Side effects are chiefly dermatologic, including redness, scaling and dryness of the skin, itching and burning. These side effects can usually be managed by adjustment of the amount and timing of retinoid applied to the skin. Dose adjustment must be discussed with the dermatologist who prescribed the treatment.

2.   Are there any acne treatments specifically for people with dark skin? Are there any treatments specifically harmful to dark skin?

There are no acne treatments specifically for use on dark skin. Acne treatments are generally as safe and effective on dark skin as on light skin. Some treatments for acne scars may cause temporary lightening of dark skin.

Acne is a common skin disease that has the same causes and follows the same course in all colors of skin.

Very dark or black skin may be less well-moisturized than lighter skin. Topical anti-acne agents such as benzoyl peroxide that have a drying effect on the skin should be used under the supervision of a dermatologist. Benzoyl peroxide also is a strong bleach and therefore must be applied carefully to avoid inadvertent decolorization of a patch of hair, towels or clothing.

Darker skin has a tendency to develop post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (excessive skin darkening at places where the skin was inflamed). Severe inflammatory acne may result in dark spots. The spots resolve over time; a dermatologist may be able to recommend cosmetic measures to make the spots less apparent until they resolve. Some acne treatments, such as topical retinoids and azelaic acid, may also help fade the discoloration.

Removal of acne scars by dermabrasion or chemical peeling may cause temporary lightening or darkening of dark skin in the areas of treatment. Scar treatment should be discussed with a dermatologist or dermatologic surgeon before it is undertaken.

Alterations of melanin (dark pigments that give the skin its color) pigmentation such as vitiligo and melasma are not related to acne, but they may be present simultaneously with acne. The diagnosis and treatment of melanin pigmentation disorders such as vitiligo requires a dermatologist with knowledge and experience in treating these conditions.

3.   Is acne that appears for the first time in adulthood different from acne that appears in adolescence?

Acne has a specific definition as a disease of sebaceous follicles. This definition applies to acne that occurs at any age. However, it may be important to look for an underlying cause of acne that occurs for the first time in adulthood.

Current understanding of the causes of acne vulgaris is described in the Main Text section Why and how acne happens. In brief summary, acne vulgaris develops when excessive sebum production and abnormal growth and death of cells in the sebaceous follicle result in plugging of follicles with a mixture of sebum and cellular debris and formation of comedones (blackheads and whiteheads). Bacteria in the follicles-chiefly Propionibacterium acnes, the most common bacterial colonist of sebaceous follicles-may contribute to the inflammation of acne by release of metabolic products that cause inflammatory reaction. The pathogenic events, which cause disease, in the sebaceous follicle are believed to be due in large degree to changes in levels of androgenic (male) hormones in the body-a circumstance usually associated with growth and development between ages 12 and

4.   Some acne investigators believe that although this understanding is generally correct, there is more yet to be learned about the causes of acne vulgaris.

Acne that appears after the age of 25-30 years is (1) a recurrence of acne that cleared up after adolescence, (2) a flare-up of acne after a period of relative quiet-for example, during pregnancy, or (3) acne that occurs for the first time in a person who had never previously had acne.

Acne that occurs in adulthood may be difficult to treat if there are multiple recurrences. Some patients with severe recurrent acne have undergone repeated courses of treatment with the potent systemic drug isotretinoin.

Acne flares in association with pregnancy or menstruation are due to changes in hormonal patterns.

Acne that appears for the first time in adulthood should be investigated for any underlying cause. Drugs that can induce acne include anabolic steroids (sometimes used illegally by athletes to "bulk up"), some anti-epileptic drugs, the anti-tuberculosis drugs isoniazid and rifampin, lithium, and iodine-containing drugs. Chlorinated industrial chemicals may induce the occupational skin disorder known as chloracne. Chronic physical pressure on the skin-for example, by a backpack and its straps, or a violin tucked against the angle of the jaw and chin-may induce so-called acne mechanica. Some metabolic conditions may cause changes in hormonal balance that can induce acne.

Some lesions that appear to be acne may be another skin disorder such as folliculitis-infection and inflammation of hair follicles-that require different treatment than acne. Acne that appears for the first time in adulthood should be examined and treated by a dermatologist.

5.   My 15-year-old daughter has what I would describe as a very mild case of acne. She has made it much worse by constant picking and squeezing. She looks in the mirror for hours, looking for some blackhead or blemish she can pick or squeeze. Does she need psychological counseling?

Excessive picking and squeezing of otherwise mild acne is a condition called excoriated acne, seen most often in young women. A dermatologist may provide effective counseling.

The typical person with excoriated acne is a person-often a young women-who is so distressed with her appearance due to acne that she literally tries to "squeeze the acne out of existence." The acne is often very mild, but the person's face may constantly be covered with red marks from squeezing, and open sores where lesions have been picked open.

The word excoriate means to scratch or abrade the skin. Excoriated acne is a medically recognized condition that should be discussed with a dermatologist. Occasionally giving in to a temptation to squeeze a blackhead is not defined as excoriated acne. Hours in front of a mirror, squeezing and picking every blemish, is a definition of excoriated acne. A dermatologist may be able to counsel the patient regarding a course of treatment in which the patient can participate, but keep "hands off."

6.   Can the rate of secretion or the composition of sebum be altered by diet? If it can, shouldn't alteration of diet be considered a treatment for acne?

Diet has never been proven to have a role in the cause or treatment of acne. Dietary manipulation may have a role in the treatment of some scaling diseases of the skin, but not in the treatment of acne.

Dietary cause is one of the most persistent myths about acne. Foods, such as chocolate or greasy foods, do not cause acne, but certain foods seem to make some people's acne worse. The following can bring on or worsen it:

*Hereditary factors

*An increase in male hormones found in both males and females

*Menstruation

*Emotional stress

*Oil and grease from cosmetics, work environment

No food has been shown to be effective in preventing or treating acne. A healthy diet is, of course, necessary for good general health.

7.   Shouldn't I just try to eliminate sebum from my body?

No. When it isn't blocked in your pores, sebum helps keep your skin healthy.

8.   Why does acne usually start at puberty?

No one knows for certain. What is known is that the sebaceous glands that produce sebum get much larger at puberty than they were before.

9.   Why does the skin around a pimple turn red?

This redness is caused by the body's inflammatory response. Inflammation is a sign that your immune system is working to fight an infection. However, the inflammatory response doesn't always work perfectly, and can even be the cause of scarring.

10.   If my skin turns red, does that mean that I'm going to have scars?

Usually, no. Even when there will be no permanent scar, the aftereffects of the inflammatory response can leave the skin red for months, sometimes for more than a year.

11.   What are free radicals?

Free radicals are byproducts of oxidation in your body. We all need oxidation to occur as part of our life process, but there is concern that the buildup of unrecycled free radicals contributes to many conditions, including skin damage. Antioxidants, including several of the active ingredients in Acuzine, help prevent the buildup of free radicals.

There are various types of acne such as acne vulgaris or cyst acne. Cyst acne is considered as severe and it characteristic is big swollen bumps that are filled with pus. It is usually very painful and the inflammation occurs at several layers into the skin. People who are suffering from it are looking for the best cyst acne cure to help them alleviate their pain and get rid of it once and for all.

Most acne creams that you can purchase from the market do not deal with these causes and that is why majority of them are not effective. To get rid of these causes, you have to look deeper into the problem. Most of these causes happen when we do not have a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Our modern day diet consists of junk foods that are high in sugar content and they have many chemicals that are toxic to our body. High sugar content food can cause insulin spike in our body and this will result in excess production of androgens. Excess presence of androgens can lead to hyperactive sebaceous glands that can cause oily skin. By avoiding high sugar content foods like chocolates, donuts, white bread and white rice can help to prevent over active production of androgens.

There are also foods that contain hormones and steroids that can get into our body when eaten. One example would be milk. Milk consists of hormones from pregnant cows and some of them are injected with steroids to help them produce more milk. When ingested, these hormones and steroid can disrupt our body hormonal balance and indirectly cause more acne breakouts.

Effective holistic cyst acne cure consist of making changes to your diet and lifestyle first because this is the only way to get rid of cyst permanently. Why Does Acne Affect So Many People?

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Declan_P_Tobin]Declan P Tobin

There are many different types of acne that people can get on with that there are many different methods in curing this. Technically called acne vulgaris this skin disease can unfortunately have an impact on many different individuals. In fact, it says that almost 85% of people do develop acne at some stage in their lives and mainly affects teenagers until people reach their mid-20s. A lot of people will actually suffer with breakouts at sometime in their lives so it's actually a common condition that many people suffer from. Typically we associate this condition with teenagers and generally most of these will grow out of this overtime. Many women also suffer from this even late into the 30s or 40s and there are many reasons for this.

What can cause Acne?

Exactly what leads to an acne breakouts is still relatively unknown and this is simply because the medical knowledge as to what is causing this is still relatively small. It seems as if there is absolutely not one variable that leads to the cause of this condition but it can be a number of factors that may be taken into account.

Lesions can develop within the oil-producing structures of ones skin known as pilosebaceous follicles. Oil secretions build beneath the obstructed pore, providing a perfect natural environment for the skin acne bacteria Propionibacterium acnes to increase out of control. For unknown reasons skin tissues of acne sufferers stick together within the pore.

Much deeper still acne leads to cysts which can be the most severe sort of acne and carry the potential of long term scarring. Genetics furthermore play a role within the growth and development of acne and therefore there is often a inclination for the condition to run in familys.

Acne in older adults

Just if you thought your "poor skin" days were over, mature acne hits. Just if you've successfully navigated the forces of teenage years on your skin, you get up and find acne.

You will find several reasons for adult acne. The modern craze in health-related circles is to talk about acne as a hormonal discrepancy. Hormonal changes linked to being pregnant or menstrual periods can cause or contribute to acne. Also, hormone alterations in connection with starting off or ending birth control tablets can also result in acne. Excess mental strain on the body might help with hormonal changes which have been seen to bring about acne too.

Adult acne breakouts are distinctive from adolescent acne and for that reason your remedy technique should be different.

How to treat acne

There are so many products available in the marketplace that can help to relieve acne. Some of these are offshore products and some will have not been clinically tested to see what effect they will have The principal solutions utilized to cure acne are a pharmaceutical level glycolic acid remedy along with a topical antibiotic. By applying a chemical remedy to your skin layer, called a light chemical peel, minor scarring and certain types of acne could be taken care of.

Non-prescription medications can be purchased over the counter to take care of mild kinds of acne. Topical medicines are commonly utilized in the treating acne and are generally recommended plus a retinoid or benzoyl peroxide. Topical retinoids are employed in the relief both inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne.

The cost and duration of acne cure with topical applications and antibiotics taken orally help make regular therapy far from ideal. This is the reason researchers have also been reviewing the results of special peak wavelengths of light in the management of acne, with extremely productive outcomes.

Get Rid of Cystic Acne Fast - 2 Tips To Heal Cystic Acne

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Sherell_Reinick]Sherell Reinick

Cystic acne or what is scarily called acne vulgaris is the worst kind of pimple breakout. They are more than just a little bump on the skin. These acne breakouts are deep large blemishes that are often accompanied by cysts, or soft painful lumps just inside the skin. They are commonly caused by an overproduction of oil from the sebaceous glands, dead skin cells along the follicles and the presence of Propionibacteria acnes, the hated acne-causing bacteria.

Also known as nodulocystic acne, this condition is common in young men, especially teenagers. However, there are cases that this form of acne breakout has involved both sexes from different age groups. What is startling is that cystic acne is considered hereditary. So if someone in your family suffered from it before, chances are high that you might too.

Natural Cystic Acne Remedies that Works Fast

Strawberries are not just delicious snacks but also effective remedies against cystic acne. Blend for 8 to 10 seconds five fresh strawberries along with the white part of a raw egg. You can also blend half a cup of strawberries, a tablespoon of heavy cream, and one spoonful of rice flour. Both mixtures and pastes can be applied on the affected areas. Leave them for about 30 minutes before washing them off. Strawberry leaves can also be used. Steep a handful of leaves in hot water for around five minutes. Wash the leaves after steeping and then put them on the acne. Strawberries have alkaline that decreases the size of the cysts.

Apricots have anti-inflammatory abilities which make them effective natural remedies against cystic acne. Gather the juice from fresh apricots, soak a cotton ball in it, and rub some of the juice on the affected areas. Leave it on for several hours before rinsing it off lightly. Cold compress will help decrease the swelling. Use some ice wrapped in a towel or cheesecloth on the cysts. You can also dab a cotton ball soaked in apple cider vinegar on the cystic areas. Leave the cotton ball on the acne for 15 minutes before you lightly wash it off.

Fast-Working Medications for Cystic Acne

As with other forms of acne breakouts, benzoyl peroxide is also the most recommended topical cream against pimples. In fact, it is even better than oral antibiotics because bacteria do not develop a resistance to its effects unlike in some antibiotics. These antibiotics can be topical or oral, depending on you and your dermatologist's preference. The most common antibiotics for cystic acne are erythromycin, clindamycin, and tetracyclines. Women are given oral contraceptives as a remedy for severe acne breakouts. The reason behind this is that hormones are believed to be a major cause of pimples. Other medications given are oral and topical retinoids, anti-inflammatory drugs, and antiseptics.

In severe cases, some medical procedures are necessary. Dermabrasion, phototherapy, and surgical lancing are the common procedures done on cystic acne. Surgical lancing is done by making an incision and then draining the pus and other infected substances from the area.

The Use of Benzoyl Peroxide for Acne Treatment

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Howard_Puddy]Howard Puddy

What is Benzoyl Peroxide?

Benzoyl Peroxide is a white powder with a chemical formula of (C6H5CO)O2. The chemical is known by many other names, with the more common ones including:

Benzoic acid

Benzol Peroxide

Benzaknen

Desanden

Benzoyl Superoxide

Benzoyl Peroxide has been used for treating acne for over 50 years. A very large percentage of both over the counter and prescription based topical acne treatments contain the active ingredient benzoyl peroxide. The concentrations vary, but are usually found to be in the range of between two and a half and ten percent. This is a clear indication that Benzoyl Peroxide is widely accepted as an effective treatment for acne vulgaris.

This acceptance is backed up by scientific research which has been used to demonstrate that topical treatments with concentrations of up to 10 percent benzoyl peroxide are effective in the reduction or removal of acne lesions. The normal timescale for this topical acne treatment to work is between three to twelve weeks.

A topical acne treatment is a treatment that is applied directly to the affected area, using a cream, gel or wash, rather than being taken internally or injected.

Increased concentrations of benzoyl peroxide, whilst reducing or curing acne do also however; appear to raise the likelihood of some adverse reactions, such as skin dryness or redness and occasional peeling or flaking of the skin.

There is a some evidence that the frequent use of Benzoyl Peroxide at concentrations of two and a half percent are effective at treating acne but reduce the likelihood of an adverse skin reaction to the chemical. In addition, a number of studies have shown that just using benzoyl peroxide to treat acne may not be the most effective use. Use of a combination treatment containing benzoyl peroxide and other active ingredients may actually increase its effectiveness in reducing or curing acne lesions.

How does Benzoyl Peroxide help to cure acne?

Benzoyl peroxide helps to cure acne by breaking down dead cells on the surface of the skin. This helps to unblock the sebaceous glands. This in turn, allows the sebum that the sebaceous glands secrete, to escape, rather than become trapped in the pores. Benzoyl peroxide also helps to kill the bacteria that feed on the sebum and cause the blockages in the first place, thus it helps with all the areas that can cause or exacerbate acne.

In conclusion, Benzoyl Peroxide is a widely used and effective topical treatment for acne vulgaris. It works as the single active ingredient, but is frequently combined with other active ingredients to provide more effective acne treatments, both over the counter and via prescription.

How to Be Acne Free: A Simple Remedy

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Rosina_S_Khan]Rosina S Khan

When I was a little child, I had a good and delicate skin all over my face and body. But as I started to approach my teens, one or two pimples sprang up. As I got older, there were more until it was time to take action. For tips on a simple remedy for acne, read on.

I guess many teenagers pass through this phase and have all acne cleared up by the time they reach their twenties. However, in some cases, they can continue till adult phase. That is when you start to feel worried about.

From teenager till adult stage, I have tried various creams and ointments, homeopathic treatments, facial masks in parlor and so on. But nothing seemed to work until the end. They all showed signs of working well at the start but midway they stopped working and my face was once more left with acne.

So what is the simple remedy that works for me? It is simply applying sunscreen on your face and then Johnson's Baby Powder as a light face pack outer coating before you go out in the sun. Yes, it will work magically. They will start to reduce in number but they will leave scars. So keep applying the simple makeup I suggest here, and the powder with the layer of sunscreen below will work to remove your acne scars as well. Make sure to wash your face thoroughly after you return home. If more than five-six hours have elapsed and you are still outside of your home, rinse your face and reapply the makeup.

The makeup I suggest is equally beneficial in winter days. Just be sure to rinse your face thoroughly after you return home. Wash your face as many times as you can when you are without this makeup in summer or winter. It will pay off as the dirt accumulating on your skin will be cleared off, helping to keep your face clean and immaculate and lessening the chance of sprouting of acne.

Acne usually develops on oily skin. So I do NOT recommend that you apply any lotion, heavy makeup or any other oily products on your face because if you do, they will only lead to evolving of more acne. Use only the simple makeup I suggest and see how it works for you. It works for me, and it has worked for my friends and colleagues. So chances are it will work for you as well if you have acne problems.

Occasionally before bedtime or in the late evening, you may, however, use Refreshing Apricot Scrub, which is oil-free and suitable for all skin types, which not only gives you a smooth and delicate skin but also helps to remove the dead cells on your face, giving you a lovely, refreshing look.

Understanding The Connection Between Acne And Milk

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Richa_Bansal]Richa Bansal

The connection between acne and milk has been a controversial topic for a long time; however, research studies have been able to show that milk causes acne. The studies have also shown that skim milk induces more breakouts than whole milk. The main factors that provoke acne are the hormones found in milk.

Hormones Of Interest

Milk contains many hormones; however, two have been shown to provoke acne. These hormones include:

DHT precursors: then main dihydrotestosterone (DHT) precursors are 5a-androstanedione and 5a-pregnanedione. DHT stimulates sebaceous glands creating an oilier skin that is prone to pore blockages. When most of your skin pores are blocked, the skin can't breathe properly thus acne results.

IGF-1: studies have shown that milk contains plenty of IGF-1 hormone which is important for calves, but not for you. IGF-1 is a growth hormone that makes the calves grow up big and strong. Studies have shown that the more milk you consume, the more acne you develop.

How To Get Rid Of Acne

For you to get rid of the acne provoked by milk, you need to eliminate dairy products from your diet. These products include: ice cream, cheese, kefir, and yogurt.

Since it's hard to wake up one day and resolve that you have stopped taking the dairy products, its recommended that you start slowly. For example, you should start by reducing the amount of milk in your breakfast. Once you are successful, you should then eliminate the product in your lunch and so on.

If you are truly addicted to milk thus you can't stop taking it, you shouldn't worry as there are many alternatives that you can go with. These alternatives include: organic full-fat coconut, unsweetened, coconut cream and unsweetened, organic coconut milk.

If you have the skills and time, you should prepare your own milk from nuts. Best nuts to go for are: Brazil and hazel nuts.

While the alternatives are great to have, you should be cautious as some of them contain high levels of sugar and vegetable oils that might worsen your acne. To be on the safe side you should consult your dietician before taking the alternatives.

Understanding Hormone-Free Milk

If you are keen, you must have come across "hormone-free milk." It's good to note that this isn't milk that doesn't have hormones-it's milk without synthetic hormones. It means that the milk was obtained from dairy cows that weren't given synthetic hormones.

Many people think that "hormone-free milk" doesn't have problematic hormones, but this isn't true. This milk contains IGF-1 hormones and other hormones thus it isn't good for your skin.

Conclusion

This is the connection between acne and milk. There are some people who believe that goat and sheep milk is better than cow's milk. This is untrue. Although, goat and sheep milk contains A2 proteins that are easier to digest than A1 proteins found in cows' milk, it still contains IGF-1 and other hormones that cause acne.

Facial Care For Acne-Prone Skin

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Marie_Maillet]Marie Maillet

First of all, it is important to know what acne is and what causes it. Acne is a chronic disease that affects millions of teenagers and adults around the world. It occurs when sebum, an oil secreted by the oil glands, dead skin cells and other debris clump together into a plug and clog pores. This will attract bacteria that will cause inflammations or pimples.

Cleansing should be the first step to a healthy skin care regimen, usually morning and night. People with acne should opt for a gentle cleanser containing salicylic acid that helps dry up acne. Avoid soaps; they have a higher pH level than your skin. This can cause your skin to over dry which will send your oil glands in overdrive. Definitely not what you want to happen.

If you suffer with acne, you will want to avoid exfoliation. Just a little scrubbing can irritate your skin and drive those oil glands berserk! Instead, use gentle circular motions to massage in your mild cleanser. When you are finished, rinse, and then pat. Never rub! Rubbing can irritate your skin and encourage oil production.

Choosing a moisturizer can be tricky if you have acne. The last thing you want is to clog pores and make things worse than they already are. First, you need to choose a moisturizer suitable for your skin type. You might want to go with a product made with natural ingredients such as minerals, fruit and plant extracts and vitamins. On the other hand, you may want a product made of synthetic materials. Whichever you prefer, you should make sure it is filled with antioxidants and other skin-repairing essential ingredients. Without these, your skin will be very susceptible to sun damage and red blemishes from acne breakouts.

A clay mask might be a great addition to your facial care routine. It is important however, to read labels to make sure it contains ingredients that will help get rid of acne. A mask for acne-prone skin should contain ingredients that have antimicrobial and antibacterial effects to keep blemishes away. Go for the one that has the ability to absorb and remove toxins and debris that clog pores and cause acne.

Proper facial care is crucial in controlling your acne. Although there is NO cure for acne, it is treatable. Staying committed to your skin care regimen will help keep it under control. This good habit will also keep your skin looking young and healthy. Isn't that what we all want?

Finding and purchasing proper skin care products can be complicated, but it doesn't have to be. At [http://www.antiagingmatureskin.com]http://www.antiagingmatureskin.com, you will find a wide selection of top quality facial care and anti-aging products at a very affordable price. Effective Home Facial-Care Tips

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Wilson_Gachihi]Wilson Gachihi

Did you know that your face is the only body-part that one can look at to approximate your age? Yes! But, although many people understand this they are either ignorant or just 'too busy' to take good care of their faces. Kudos to ladies, at least most of them know how to care for their faces - but there is still a number who do not know or are not doing it the right way.

When I say most ladies are trying, I don't mean that facial care is defined by the amount of make-up on the face; no, facial care is way beyond that. While scheduling frequent visits to facial experts is important, there are various facial care procedures that you can still do right from home to keep your face glowing. Here are 4 tips for home facial care:

Wash your face

According to research, washing your face several times a day is the first step to an acne-free face. When you wake up in the morning you should wash your face before applying make-up. And when you go back home from work or school wash your face again. Washing your face helps remove dust particles and other foreign materials that may have attached on your face.

Drink much water

Drinking a lot of water makes your face shinny and succulent. When water gets into the facial skin cells it makes the skin to tighten up thus counter wrinkles and bring out a youthful look on your face. It is a natural method of face lifting! Water in the metabolic system also helps get rid of toxic materials from your body which may affect your skin and other parts of your body.

Apply sun screens

Sun screens are designed to prevent the harmful sun rays from affecting your facial skin. The sun screens are usually applied on the skin under the eyes because of its susceptibility. However, when you shop for a sun screen products ensure that you choose the right one in the market. One of the best methods to spot the right product in the market is to involve an expert or a doctor.

Sleep on the right position

Do you know that your sleeping position and doing faces can impact your facial appearance? Specialists' advice a person to sleep on their back so as to prevent the face skin forming wrinkles around the mouth and the eyes. Also avoid frowning or doing faces; constantly coiling your facial skin when speaking can trigger early wrinkles.

This is an article that I have research from and compiled this useful tips to help people care for their faces right from their homes.

Penis Acne Or Penis Pimples

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Tehmina_Mazher]Tehmina Mazher

Are you suffering from penis acne or penis pimples? If your answer is yes, then first of all make this thing clear that it not because of a sexually transmitted disease. In most case it is perfectly normal. I know it is extremely embarrassing. The most common reason of experiencing penis pimples is consumption of fatty foods and excessive sweating. Sometimes the underlying cause is the lack of hygiene.

There are many things that can be done for getting rid of penis acne. Generally it goes away at its own. Sometimes the change in the diet is the most important part of the cure. The first step in the diet change is switching to plain drinking water. Drinking plenty of plain drinking water helps to flush away the toxins from the body. Juices are good but caffeinated drinks like coffee worsen the condition. It is also important to cut the amount of processed and fatty foods. You must substitute these fatty and oily snacks like chips with dried fruits and rice cake.

Another reason of getting caught by penis acne is "underwear". Tight fitted undergarments cause the area to sweat more. This triggers the outbreak of acne. Loose fitted underwear and breathable cotton is best as it can draw excessive moisture from the area. Try using baby powder in crotch area. (If you are not circumcised keep it away from your foreskin.)

You can try using some antibiotic cream on your penis pimple but never try the one that you have been using for your facial acne. Generally facial crèmes have alcohol in it; this may irritate the penis and genital area. Only use antibiotic cream with greatest care and only on the exact spot. Never try to pop or squeeze the pimple. It only worsens the situation.

There are many things that can be done to get rid of penis pimples. You can find a lot of healthy information on different websites. Your health care provider can also help you. Mostly the simple steps mentioned above will help the acne to fade away. However if the above mentioned steps are unable to resolve the acne it is better talk to your doctor.

He may be in a better position of suggesting or even giving you a prescriptive oral antibiotic medicine. There are many men who hesitate to talk about the problem they are suffering. This is the worst thing they can do with their health. It is important to take professional help.

However if you are one of those who hesitate to talk to doctor then you can check [http://www.acnenaturalremedies.com/Pimples-on-Penis.html]Penis Pimple. Ways to Do Away With Back Acne

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Donald_Cash]Donald Cash

Back acne is caused when the pores and hair roots on the back get clogged by extreme sebum which gathers and blends with dirt on the skin surface area. This in turn produces an environment suitable for germs to thrive in. The bacteria increase, thereby causing the pores to become inflamed and filled with pus.

The normal friction between skin and clothing also worsens the scenario by triggering irritability. Although the back is normally fully covered up, acne on the back can be far more painful than facial acne. However, as with any other form of acne, it can be treated.

Many people who suffer from back acne have a go at "popping" the zits once they become more noticeable. Unfortunately, interfering with the spots only serves to further aggravate the skin and add to the problem. The first step towards getting rid of the acne is by preventing the "popping" from happening.

Exercising correct health is vital to getting rid of bacne. If you have long hair that rests on your back, it is suggested to wash it routinely or maintain it in a bun to avoid contact with the zits as it could aggravate the condition. At the same time, your skin will also suffer less rubbing, which can worsen the acne.

Avoid using a backpack until the condition has cleared away totally, as this can cause your back to sweat far more than usual.

Make sure that you maintain as healthy a lifestyle as possible if you want to get rid of your back acne. This requires a well balanced diet, drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day and getting around 7-9 hours of sleep every night. Your diet should be high in vitamins A, C, D and E as these are important for the regeneration and healing of skin. Try and avoid eating unhealthy food including food high in trans-fats. These are the primary culprits when it comes to acne.

For an extreme case, you can see a skin specialist to treat you accordingly. In many cases, the back acne can require advanced medical treatment.

Even though it is covered, back acne is more agonizing than facial acne. Avoid lugging a backpack around until the acne has cleared entirely as this causes your back to sweat more than normal.

Remember to preserve a healthy way of living if you really want to get rid of your back acne.

Mimic Acne - Which Skin Conditions Are Like Acne?

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Bill_Wynne]Bill Wynne

It is important to know if your skin condition is acne or not. There are other skin conditions that mimic acne and you want to make sure that you know which you have so you can employ the right treatment.

The skin conditions that mimic acne are:

Rosacea
This skin condition is very similar to acne as depicted by pimples in the middle of the face with redness, flushing and even superficial blood vessels. This condition mainly affects those in their 30's to 40's, even older in some cases. There are times when telling Rosacea from acne is near impossible. There will not be whiteheaded pimples or blackheads when someone has Rosacea.

Pseudofolliculitis
This condition is caused by shaving as it is also called "razor bumps or razor rash" As the razor blade slides across the skin cutting the hair close to the skin, curly hairs bend under the skin and cause pimples. Since this condition is not cause by bacteria thus making it a mechanical problem this calls for shaving less and looking for alternative ways to trimming facial and neck hair. People with acne can also have Pseudofolliculitis.

Folliculitis
Pimples occur not only on the face but on your chest, back, legs, even the buttocks. These are inflamed follicles and are not signs of acne. To solve this skin condition "if the inflamed follicles do not go away on their own" see a dermatologist where antibiotics can be prescribed, usually different antibiotics than prescribed for acne.

Gram-Negative Folliculitis
This condition is found within those patients who have been on antibiotics for long periods of time. What takes place is that pustules filled with bacteria have become resistant to the antibiotics used for treatment in the past. A dermatologist can run a culture test and figure out which antibiotics will kill these resistant germs.

Pyoderma Faciale
This skin disorder is also called rosacea fulmimians. This is acute with onset and usually affects younger to middle aged women with or without prior skin disorders. The depiction for this condition is large erythemayous papules and pustules with nodules. Comedones (blackheads) are absent. The tranquil skin is uninvolved and there are no systemic symptoms.

Condition Treatment: A dermatologist will start you on a systemic corticosteroid regimen for a month before taking the next step which is using Isotretinoin. The average dose is between 120-150mg/kg. When beginning the use of Isotretinoin, the continuous use of corticosteroids should be slowly tapered as you continue through the course of treatment.

Pityrosporum Folliculitis (Malassezia Folliculitis)
Traditionally found upon the chest and back also mimics truncal vulgaris. Inflamed pustules are present as there are no comedones or nodules present, however the lesions may give a sensation to itch. Through KOH examinations; the presences of yeast and hyphal structures of Malassezzia furfur are found. To properly identify the contents of yeast in the follicle.

A dermatologist would suggest a topical treatment with the use of selenium sulfide and or azole agents could be affective as well. In such a case whereas the topical regiment fails, a systemic itraconazole or ketoconazole could be used.

Demodex Folliculitis
With this skin condition, mites are present in an average skin biopsy and could cause an inflammatory reaction with folliculitis in some cases. This is a skin situation that the elderly in particular have to content with unlike acne vulgaris. You will find follicular papules and pustules around the face close to the hair line as they may be itchy. Comedones (blackheads) will not be present.

You now realize the importance of confirming a skin condition because there are multiple skin conditions that mimic acne. It is important to know so the proper treatment can be followed.

Acne Vulgaris the Cause of Pain and Humiliation

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jin_Kahlon]Jin Kahlon

Acne has many forms but the most common is referred to as "Acne Vulgaris", meaning "common acne". Acne vulgaris is an inflammatory disease of the skin, caused by changes to your skin structures which, consists of hair follicle and its associated sebaceous glands. Acne lesions are commonly referred to as pimples, spots or zits.

What causes Acne Vulgaris

Acne is caused by the blocking of your pores by dead skin cells which subsequently block the hair follicle. This results in the build up of oils produced by the sebaceous glands (these are found under your skin); a perfect environment for skin bacteria to multiply uncontrollably.

The outcome of this build up of bacteria under your skin is the skin inflames, producing the visible lesion (acne). The face, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms are especially affected

Aside from acne scarring the main impact of acne is psychological, such as reduced self-esteem, depression or suicide. Acne usually strikes during adolescence and is more prominent in the western society. It is considered an abnormal response to normal levels of the male hormone testosterone.

As time progresses acne tends to disappear or decrease by the time you reach your early twenties. There is no time frame for acne vulgaris to disappear entirely and some people even suffer from acne decades later, into their thirties and forties and maybe longer. Acne affects a large percentage of the human population at some point during their lives.

Why Have I Got Acne?

A very valid question and unfortunately one that does not have an answer. It is not clear why some people get acne and some people do not. It is partly due to who you are (hereditary). Several factors are known to be linked to acne:

o Diet

o Stress

o Active Hormones - such as menstrual cycles and puberty

o Accumulation of dead skin cells

o Use of anabolic steroids

o Bacteria in the pores, to which the body becomes allergic too

o Skin irritation

o Any medication containing halogens

o Exposure to high levels of chlorine compounds

Getting acne vulgaris in your later years is not common but the development of rosacea which may have a similar appearance is. If you do suffer from adult acne this may be due to a underlying condition such as pregnancy or disorder. Dermatologists are seeing more cases of menopause-associated acne as fewer women replace the natural anti-acne ovarian hormone estradiol whose production fails as women arrive at menopause.

Acne vulgaris is a skin disorder which impacts us at some point during our lives, some more than others. Skin care is essential to help prevent or reduces the effects of acne.

Acne Vulgaris - The Cause

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Noel_Clarke]Noel Clarke

The most common form of acne is referred to as "Acne Vulgaris". Alterations to your skin especially your hair follicles and the associated sebaceous glands cause inflammation of the skin . Pimples, zits, spots and acne are familiar names that identify Acne Vulgaris.

Acne Vulgaris is caused by the barring of your skin pores by dead cells, leading to the out break of acne. This results in the build up of oils created by the sebaceous glands (based under your
skin); which is a perfect environment for skin bacteria to multiply.  As the oil collects under your skin it becomes inflamed and creates a visible pimple on your skin. The face, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms are generally the most affected.

Acne produces visible scars, but it's the emotional ones which can do the most damage, such as depression and low self-esteem, which has even led to suicide .
Acne usually strikes during adolescence, and is more prominent in the western society.

Normally, as you age you will find that your acne lessens or disappears completely by the time you hit your twenties. But, unfortunately there is no strict time frame for acne vulgaris to vanish altogether, and some people suffer from acne well into their thirties and forties and sometimes even longer. Acne affects a large percentage of the human population at some point during their lives.

The question as to why people get acne has no real answer. It is not clear why some people get acne and others do not. It is partly due to genes, if your parents suffered from Acne Vulgaris,
then the chances are you will to.

Diet,  Stress,  Active Hormones - such as menstrual cycles, puberty and menopause, are  known to influence the onset of acne. Other factors include the build up of dead skin  cells and the use of anabolic steroids.

As people age, they may suffer from Rosacea which has a similar appearance to acne vulgaris.  Acne Vulgaris is a skin disorder which impacts most people at some point in their lives.

Some people are affected more severely than others, but in all cases It is necessary to treat acne symptoms early to deflect unnecessary pain and grief.

Acne Vulgaris Treatment - How to Cure Cystic Acne!

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Charles_Gordon]Charles Gordon

What is the best treatment for acne vulgaris? The unfortunate fact for many young men and women is that acne vulgaris, also called cystic acne is a very common skin disease and it isn't very easy to find a treatment that helps you get rid of it. However, don't give up just yet!

What is acne vulgaris?

Acne vulgaris affects mostly skin with the most dense population of sebaceous follicles and these areas include not only the face, but also the upper part of chest and the upper back. It can cause everything from Seborrhea (scaly red skin) and Nodules (large papules) to Comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) and Papules (pinheads). This disease is most common amongst boys and girls in their teenage years, but it often times also occurs in adult men and women.

Different treatment options

There are many treatment options available for this condition and while some of them may produce great results with some patients, others will barely get any help from that very same treatment. So let's take a closer look at how you can possibly cure your acne.

Oral drugs for acne

Vitamin A derivative (Isotretinoin) which is being marketed with brand names Roaccutane and Accutane is an oral drug that is usually prescribed for a period of 4 to 6 months. It can help patients both in short-term as well as long-term.. However, Isotretinoin does not usually cure acne completely and many patients have been disappointed to notice the return of acne vulgaris on their skin some time after they stop taking Accutane.

It is believed that Isotretinoin primarily works by reducing the secretion of oils from the glands, although some of the studies and clinical trials suggest that it also affects other acne-related factors as well.

There are some severe side effects caused by Accutane and this is why many men and women have not completed their treatment period. Most notorious of the side effects of course is dryness of skin, which can get so uncomfortable for the patient that they simply can't keep on taking this drug. More concerning is that there are reports which indicate that Accutane can actually damage the liver of patients. This drug also is not for pregnant women because it can cause causes birth defects. In fact female patients are nowadays required to use two separate forms of birth control in order to make sure they won't get pregnant without knowing it while on this treatment.

Natural treatment

In later years, many clinical trials have shown that acne vulgaris responds very well to natural treatment. Mixes of natural herbs have been giving some real relief from acne to many men and women of all ages and these type of treatments are getting more and more popular by the day.

One of the reasons for their increasing popularity as acne cure is that medications have not been able to do the job, so does speak. While most popular oral drugs aren't able to provide permanent cure for this very unpleasant skin disease, many natural herbs have worked much better for that. Patients have been able to improve the condition of their skin considerably and most have seen acne disappear for good. Another plus side is that there are no side effects whatsoever and that is a huge advantage over prescription drugs!

If you wish to try a natural treatment for acne vulgaris, there is a natural product that has been very popular among men and women suffering from cystic acne. It is called Clear Skin Max and I recommend you'll go and see what others think of it, read Clear Skin Max reviews [http://clearskinmax-reviews.org/].

Acne Vulgaris - There is No Acne Vulgaris Treatment - Is That True?

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Yulistina_Fitri]Yulistina Fitri

Acne vulgaris is the scientific name for acne. It is an inflammatory disease of the skin caused by changes in the pilosebaceous units. It affects around 60 % until 70 % of USA people and 20 % of them have severe acne. Acne vulgaris affects to skin area including face, upper chest and back.

However, not all family will have the same condition as described above. Instead, their children have also chance to get excess sebum, the presence and activity of propionibacterium acnes, and inflammation.

b. Androgen hormones.
These hormones have function to release ovaries, testis and adrenal glands. Androgen hormones also promotes production of sebum and then release it.

c. Excess of sebum.
excess of sebum is caused by puberty. Production of sebum is also influenced by number of different hormones such as Androgen hormones.

d. Propionibacterium acnes.
Propionibacterium acnes is an anaerobic organism that promotes inflammation through variety of mechanism.

 Acne vulgaris treatment:

For acne vulgaris treatment, dermatologist still don't know one treatment that can solve all your acne problem. They advice patient to try one treatment to another until they find the right solution for the patient. And it makes them frustrated.

What is Acne Vulgaris and the Causes of It?

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dominique_Brown]Dominique Brown

Acne Vulgaris (also known as acne) is a common skin condition that affects around 55%-70% of people in the U.S in their lifetimes. Out of those people 20% of them will have severe acne which can scar them physically and mentally. Acne Vulgaris is the most common disease in the U.S and is known noninflammatory, closed or open comedowns, inflammatory papules, pustules, and nodules. The disease affects areas that have the densest amount of sebaceous follicles (oil glands) which are the face, back, and the upper part of the chest.

The causes of acne vulgaris come from 4 factors which the first is genetics. For example if both parents had acne then most likely 3 out of 4 of their children will have acne. For some families though this skin condition skips generations which is similar to other genetic conditions. What the children inherit from their parents is the higher chance of their sebaceous follicles being clogged which will lead to the skin condition. Other things that could be gotten from parents are inflammation, excess sebum, and the activity of P. (Propionibacterium) acnes.

Another of the main things that can trigger acne vulgaris is androgen hormones. These are hormones that are released ovaries, testis, and adrenal glands. Testosterone which is one of these hormones causes sebaceous follicle activity. Also androgen hormones receptors are found within sebaceous glands and if the receptors malfunction they do not cultivate acne.

A third cause of acne vulgaris is an excess of sebum. Sebum is dictated by different mediators and hormones. A main factor in causing an excess in sebum is androgen hormones but even though it is most men and women who have acne vulgaris have a normal circulation of androgen hormones. Some other things that control sebum are growth hormones and insulin like growth factors.
