Understanding The Connection Between Acne And Milk

The connection between acne and milk has been a controversial topic for a long time; however, research studies have been able to show that milk causes acne. The studies have also shown that skim milk induces more breakouts than whole milk. The main factors that provoke acne are the hormones found in milk.

Hormones Of Interest

Milk contains many hormones; however, two have been shown to provoke acne. These hormones include:

DHT precursors: then main dihydrotestosterone (DHT) precursors are 5a-androstanedione and 5a-pregnanedione. DHT stimulates sebaceous glands creating an oilier skin that is prone to pore blockages. When most of your skin pores are blocked, the skin can't breathe properly thus acne results.

IGF-1: studies have shown that milk contains plenty of IGF-1 hormone which is important for calves, but not for you. IGF-1 is a growth hormone that makes the calves grow up big and strong. Studies have shown that the more milk you consume, the more acne you develop.

How To Get Rid Of Acne

For you to get rid of the acne provoked by milk, you need to eliminate dairy products from your diet. These products include: ice cream, cheese, kefir, and yogurt.

Since it's hard to wake up one day and resolve that you have stopped taking the dairy products, its recommended that you start slowly. For example, you should start by reducing the amount of milk in your breakfast. Once you are successful, you should then eliminate the product in your lunch and so on.

If you are truly addicted to milk thus you can't stop taking it, you shouldn't worry as there are many alternatives that you can go with. These alternatives include: organic full-fat coconut, unsweetened, coconut cream and unsweetened, organic coconut milk.

If you have the skills and time, you should prepare your own milk from nuts. Best nuts to go for are: Brazil and hazel nuts.

While the alternatives are great to have, you should be cautious as some of them contain high levels of sugar and vegetable oils that might worsen your acne. To be on the safe side you should consult your dietician before taking the alternatives.

Understanding Hormone-Free Milk

If you are keen, you must have come across "hormone-free milk." It's good to note that this isn't milk that doesn't have hormones-it's milk without synthetic hormones. It means that the milk was obtained from dairy cows that weren't given synthetic hormones.

Many people think that "hormone-free milk" doesn't have problematic hormones, but this isn't true. This milk contains IGF-1 hormones and other hormones thus it isn't good for your skin.

Conclusion

This is the connection between acne and milk. There are some people who believe that goat and sheep milk is better than cow's milk. This is untrue. Although, goat and sheep milk contains A2 proteins that are easier to digest than A1 proteins found in cows' milk, it still contains IGF-1 and other hormones that cause acne.
