Author: Cosmedic Skin Solutions
What is Acne?
Acne is a skin condition that causes pimples. This includes whiteheads, blackheads, and red inflamed patches of skin. In simple words Acne is Pimples. Our skin has pores (tiny holes) which connect to oil glands that are under the skin. The oil glands are connected to the pores via follicles. Pimples grow when these follicles get blocked and infected.
Where does Acne occurs?
Pimples occur on the patient\'s face, back, chest, shoulders, neck and upper   arms.
 What causes Acne?
Acne occurs when tiny holes on the surface of the skin become clogged. These holes are called pores.
  • Each pore opens to a follicle. A follicle contains a hair and an oil gland. The oil released by the gland helps remove old skin cells and keeps your skin soft.
  • When glands produce too much oil, the pores can become blocked. Dirt, bacteria, and cells build up. The blockage is called a plug or comedones.
  • If the top of the plug is white, it is called a whitehead.
  • If the top of the plug is dark, it is called a blackhead.
  • If the plug breaks open, swelling and red bumps occur.
How is Acne diagnosed?
Acne is easily diagnosed by the appearance of the spots and by their distribution on the face, neck, chest or back. However, there are several varieties of acne and doctor will be able to tell you which type you have after examining your skin. The most common type is ‘Acne Vulgaris\'.
Treatment
Daily Steps you can take to help your Acne:
  • Clean your skin gently with Cosmedic\'s Sali-Q Active Cleanser, a pH and skin charge modified cleanser that delivers purifying Salicylic Acid without the irritation!
  • Remove all dirt or make-up. Wash once or twice a day, including after exercising. However, avoid scrubbing or repeated skin washing.
  • Shampoo your hair daily, especially if it is oily. Comb or pull your hair back to keep the hair out of your face.
  • Try not to squeeze, scratch, pick, or rub the pimples. Although it might be tempting to do this, it can lead to skin infections and scarring.
  • Avoid touching your face with your hands or fingers.
  • If you wear make-up, wear products that are oil-free or water-based. Choose products that are labelled as being ‘non-comedogenic\' (should not cause blackheads or whiteheads).
  • Eat lots of green vegetables and fruits and exercise!
Available Treatments:
Antibiotics or Antiseptics:
  • Oral antibiotics such as tetracycline, doxycycline, minocycline, erythromycin, trimethoprim, and amoxicillin are commonly prescribed.
  • Topical antibiotics such as clindamycin, erythromycin, or dapsone are also used. However, these antibiotics can breed resistance, thereby making your bacteria more resistant to the bacteria around.
  • Antiseptics: Benzoyl Peroxide is a common antiseptic, however it is very irritating and is so strong that it can even bleach your clothes!
Retinoids or Vitamin A Derivatives
  • Retinoids such as tretinoin, tazarotene and adapalene are very effective for Acne. However, they can cause dryness, redness and irritation.
  • Retinol and Retinyl Palmitate are slightly weaker versions, however in the right percentage, they are highly effective against Acne, without the side effects!
  • Cosmedic offers skin solutions such as Eracne N and Eracne, both of which use Retinyl Palmitate to erase acne while reducing scars and marks
